Flying High Over Napa

Show #601  Judged

MADE BY: Marina Towne

QUILTED BY:  Marina Towne

One of my favorite places to visit is Napa Valley in the summer. In this quilt I imagine sitting on a winery patio, gazing over at the vines loaded with grapes, colorful balloons flying high and the coastal range in the distance. Made using fused raw edge appliqué, tulle for shading, paint sticks and thread painting.

Lily Pad

Show #603  Judged

MADE BY: Jan Petre

QUILTED BY:  Jan Petre

The design was inspired by a photo taken by Jay Castor. The lily flower is primarily batiks, while the pads are hand dyed or aged muslins. Oil pastels, inks, and colored pencils were used to enhance shading on leaves and flower lines. The quilt was quilted on a domestic machine.

Tulip

Show #604  Judged

MADE BY: Sue Serrano

QUILTED BY:  Sue Serrano

This tulip was my first attempt at fabric painting in a class by Velda Newman. The pieces have been sitting in various spots for many years (like 12 or so!). I finally felt that I could piece it together and thread paint it, adding to the fabric painting I did years ago. I actually like how it turned out, especially the background quilting.

Azul Enamorado

QUILTED BY:  Sue Serrano

I took a class at Zephyr Point with Donna Greenwald several years ago. The subject matter is Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe. This quilt was a challenge to complete because I kept getting stuck again and again once the retreat was over and then procrastinating (like 5 years!) moving to the next section to finish it. And then there was the daunting process of quilting it. Lots of little stippling....and I am NOT a stippling girl!! And now that it's done, I do like it.

Rose for Dad

Show #608

MADE BY: Sue Serrano

QUILTED BY:  Sue Serrano

I took a photo of a rose in my father-in-law's garden; he LOVES his flowers, and I wanted to give him a permanent one to look at inside his house. I transferred the image to fabric and thread painted it completely. Little did I know that by the time I finished it and had it framed, he would only be able to enjoy it very briefly as he passed away a few months after I gave it to him. Now the Rose for Dad hangs in my piano room, and I look at it every day for him.

MADE BY: Jane Haworth

QUILTED BY:  Jane Haworth

Having made many pet portraits I wanted to challenge myself to make a larger one using non-representational colors. This is a 600% enlargement of the photo that I found on Pinterest. It took me 2 months to track down the owner and get the permission to use her photo of Flossie. I raided my scraps, old and ugly fabrics to use in this quilt.

QUILTED BY:  Terry Harman

I had wanted to take Jane Haworth's class for a long time. I thought I finally had a date and time I could and then we went into Covid quarantine! Jane then posted her lessons online so I signed up for that. This quilt is for a close friend and I only wish you could see her face when I gave it to her. It turned out an EXACT replica of her dog. I took me approximately 3-4 months to do this but since we were in quarantine it was a fantastic time to finally get it done.

MADE BY: Jan Petre

QUILTED BY:  Jan Petre

This quilt was inspired from a photo of a Saw Whet owl in Glacier Bay National Park (photographer Nat Drumheller). The owl, only 7-8 inches long, is known for it's adorable BIG orange eyes! The pattern was hand drawn using David Taylor's pattern drawing technique to capture the bird's structure and feather movement. Each piece of the owl was hand appliqued to the adjacent pieces. The quilt was quilted on a domestic machine.

Done in Jane Haworth’s online class. Great fun, and I tried a different technique of quilting the grid before I positioned and fused down the bees and flower that had been prepared separately. I will definitely use that technique more often.

I saw this quilt at the Hickory Stick quilt shop in Hannibal, Missouri while on the Whistle Stop bus trip a few years ago. Quilted with silk thread, which was new for me, but I like the way it feels. Design by Sharon Wasteney
